My best friend asked me to make a men’s bag for her boyfriend as a Christmas present last year. I used the thickest jacket leather I could find and lined it with suede from a skirt. I made sure the handles were short and the strap long and adjustable. I have to say, I was very happy with how it came out. My friend loved it and so did her boyfriend. Maybe one day the shop will have a men’s department…
We are having a 20% off sale until midnight on Monday. The discount is for a minimum purchase of $100 and is valid for all bags that are ready to ship, special orders, bespoke (send us your jacket) orders, and sale items.
Since our bags are handmade and take up to two weeks for special orders, this will be our only discount of the season. If you want to order a bag as a gift, please order early to guarantee delivery by Christmas.
This weekend we shot our latest collection of bags for winter 2011-12 on the rooftop of my studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A former shipyard, it is such an incredible place to work and one of the best kept secrets of NYC. Just across the East River from Manhattan, it has one of the most beautiful views of the city and it is an industrial wonderland full of so much history. Old dilapidated buildings with just the frames remaining next to green businesses run out of huge loft spaces, it is a thriving urban industrial park with big plans for the future. New York state is putting so much work into reviving the yard and turning it into the sustainable manufacturing center of NYC.
I highly recommend visiting Bldg 92, the brand new museum dedicated to the BNY’s history. I stopped by this weekend and it gave me a renewed appreciation for where I work.

Wow – it’s been such a busy month that I nearly forgot to post about this. Fast Company released a really awesome (free) iPad app about a month ago that showcases some of their favorite American-made design companies. Shannon South/reMade USA was selected as one of 76 companies featured.
Along with the app, there was a month long pop-up shop on Fab.com that just ended Friday. I had iPad cases, iPhone cases and zip pouch for sale at 20% off. It was a great sale and in case you missed it because I didn’t get around to posting until the sale ended, I’d like to offer an extra week of 20% off all iPhone/iPad/Zip pouches. (they make great gifts!)

Summer certainly feels like it’s finally arrived here in New York and as much as I’d love to be spending my days sitting in the sun, I’m busy working on new designs to add to the reMade collection. I have a new intern from France and she is crazy for bows. Here is a sneak peak at two brand new pieces, inspired by and modeled by my awesome and lovely intern, Anais. The red bag is a brand new style called Dekalb and the necklace is a leather bow made of scrap leather on a silver chain. They will be available very soon.
The really interesting thing about what I do is that every bag I make is a surprise. No two bags are the same – each has its own personality and history. Every style eventually finds an owner who loves and cherishes it, but sometimes it takes time to make the match. The bag above is the Ashbury in a range of mixed browns. Aside from shape, it is nothing like the other multi-brown Ashbury shown in my shop and I don’t know that I could ever replicate that. I believe a customer has to be very open and trusting and appreciative of the fact that their bag will be like none other to be comfortable with ordering it, sight unseen. I realize that is a lot to ask of someone and I’m thinking I may need to go back to photographing every bag I make and selling the exact bag photographed. Is that what you would prefer? I would love to hear thoughts on this…
I’m very happy with my newest collection of totes and shoulder bags and wanted to be sure to let you know about them. Five brand new bags have been added to the shop and there is only one of each available. I’d love to hear your thoughts on them… Check them out here.
The Franklin tote is the largest tote from the minimal collection. I just finished it yesterday and it is now available for purchase. The first to order will get this exact one and any orders after will be based on this, but details will be different. All of the Franklin totes will be made from soft black leather pants and lined with natural recycled cotton canvas. They will each include one interior leather pocket.
These days I’m in a very minimalist sort of mood and my work seems to be reflecting that. I’m working on a collection of basic leather tote bags made from pants. Here is a sneak peek of one of them.
